Local Yarn Store Day is April 27th.

Rosemary’s Gift & Yarn Shop, 39 Roosevelt Trail, Windham:  Amanda Kovats (207-893-7056) dropped off 85 hand-made crochet and knit bears for Operation Sunshine Bears today at Rosemary’s Gift & Yarn Shop in Windham.  The bears (and seven monkeys!) were made by 29 women from the Women’s Center at the Maine Correctional Center.

Operation Sunshine Bears is the brainchild of Rosemary Libby, owner of Rosemary’s Gift & Yarn Shop, “The Largest Yarn Shop in Maine.” Knitters and crocheters create and stuff the bears, which are collected by Rosemary and her staff at the shop. The bears are then distributed to the Ronald McDonald House, the Maine Medical Child Life Program Barbara Bush Wing in Portland, and several other organizations and agencies.

In addition to the cuddly, hand-made stuffed animals, the women from the Women’s Center at MCC made 80 adult and childrens’ hats that will be distributed to local schools and the Preble Street shelter.

The women at the correctional center rely on donated yarn to make their projects. They purchase their knitting needles and crochet hooks themselves, as the implements have to meet certain requirements to be used within the Women’s Center.

Rosemary’s Gift & Yarn Shop is hosting a yarn drive on April 27th at the shop (39 Roosevelt Trail) to help keep the women crafters at the MCC Women’s Shelter supplied with raw materials. The yarn collection event will be held in conjunction with Local Yarn Store Day on April 27th.

The yarn collection event will be promoted on the shop’s website (www.maine-crafts.com) and on their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Rosemarys-Gift-Yarn-Shop-111390088891313/).

Mechita is super soft and great for lighter projects such as shawls, scarves, garments, accessories, baby and kids items, lace, cables, textured stitches. Be sure to get enough yarn to complete your project since each bag is a different dye lot, and skeins may vary from bag to bag. To ensure random color distribution, work from two balls of yarn at once, alternating a few rows from each ball.

New Yarn! Malabrigo Rios is a 4-ply yarn that is soft, strong, and washable! The plies help resist pilling and washability makes it fantastic for frequently-worn garments, housewares, and children and baby clothes. And like all Malabrigo yarns, it’s super soft and great for next-to-the-skin wear! Spun from premium superwash merino, it comes in an array of watercolor-multi, semi-solid, and variegated colorways.

Great for: Accessories, garments, baby and kids items, housewares, toys, cables, textured stitches, colorwork.

New Yarn! Cascade 220 Superwash Merino takes Cascade’s classic 220 Superwash and makes it even better by making it with 100% extra soft superwash Merino wool. It works up virtually the same as the the other 220 superwash, but the luxury of the Merino make this yarn one of the nicest available. And we now carry 35 incredible colors! Gauge is 20 sts to 4″ on US size 7 (4.5 mm) needles, or 13 – 16 sc = 4″ with a G or H hook (4.25 – 5.0 mm). Machine wash cool, tumble dry low.

New Colors! Cascade 220 Superwash Aran Splatter is a fantastic addition to the 220 Superwash® line. This aran weight yarn is thicker than the traditional 220 Superwash but not quite as thick as the 128 Superwash making it a perfect in between weight and with added flecks of color it’s bursting with possibilities! Try this soft, impeccably plied yarn in big fisherman sweater projects, cowls, hats, mittens or any project that needs a durable 100% wool.
